Today, we flew from Siem Reap to Bangkok. After a 5-hour layover in Bangkok, we boarded a 10-hour flight to Auckland, New Zealand. In Auckland, we had a 6-hour layover. What to do… what to do?

I know. Let’s strap ourselves to the Skytower in downtown Auckland and walk around the outside of the building – 576 feet up – with no railing. Yep, that’s what we did.

From Aidan: We went to the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. We walked around the top of the building, exposed to the elements. I thought that if Grandma Shirley were here, she would have been scared. When we were up on the tower, there were things called “challenges.” I did all of them. One of them was to lean face first over the edge. That was my favorite. I really liked our layover in Auckland!

Before the grandparents freak out, the Skywalk was perfectly safe and well-researched in advance. Auckland – what we saw of it – was lovely and reminded us of Seattle or Sydney. From the air, New Zealand looked like home in Oregon – green and mountainous with a rocky coastline.

Now we’re back on a plane for a 6-hour flight to Papeete, Tahiti, in the South Pacific.
